I'm a reasonably organised person. I track things. I plan ahead. And for years, I absolutely dreaded the end of every month.

Not because the business wasn't going well — but because financial admin was a disaster. Not a catastrophic one. A slow, grinding, one-hour-turns-into-four kind of disaster. Receipts in one app, invoices in another, expenses that needed to be exported from one tool and imported into a second, multi-currency transactions that nobody's software quite handled the way I needed.

Once, the night before an important meeting, I found myself doing manual data entry at midnight because the export from my invoicing tool didn't match the format my expense tracker expected. I sat there thinking: this is insane. I am building tech products for a living and I cannot get my own financial admin to work without treating it like a data migration project.

That's where Money Magician started.

It wasn't about hating numbers

I want to be clear about something: hating financial admin doesn't mean you're bad at business. Most of the freelancers and creators I know are sharp, detail-oriented people. They're not struggling because they can't handle complexity. They're struggling because the tools were designed for accountants, not for the way independent workers actually operate.

QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks — they're good software. They do what they were built to do. But they were built around accounting workflows: transaction categorization, ledger reconciliation, double-entry bookkeeping. That logic made sense in 1995. It still makes sense if you have a bookkeeper.

If you're a solo creator or a small team without a dedicated finance person, those tools ask you to learn a system that wasn't designed with you in mind. And adding AI to the top of that system — which is what most of them have done — doesn't fix the fundamental problem. It just makes the old workflow faster.

What I actually needed

I needed to ask "how much did I make last month in euros, net of costs?" and get an answer in three seconds. Not navigate to a reports tab, choose a date range, export to CSV, and open a spreadsheet.

I needed to send an invoice in two minutes, not configure a payment gateway and set up a client profile and choose a tax category.

I needed my multi-currency income — euros, dollars, pounds, the occasional surprise in a currency I'd never invoiced in before — to just work, without manual conversion steps.

And I needed all of this to not feel like a second job.

What Money Magician does differently

Money Magician is built AI-native, which sounds like marketing but means something specific here. The interface isn't a dashboard with an AI chat button bolted on. The AI is the interface.

You type "what's my net income for Q1?" and it answers. You ask "which client owes me the most right now?" and it tells you. You say "create an invoice for [client] for 3 hours of consulting at €150" and it's done. No menu navigation, no form fields, no remembering where the settings are.

The underlying model is Claude — running either through the Money Magician interface or, if you prefer, directly through Claude Desktop or Jan AI using our MCP integration. Your financial data becomes queryable through the same AI interface you already use for everything else.

For EU freelancers and creators specifically, multi-currency is built in properly. Not as an add-on, not with manual conversion — it handles mixed-currency invoicing and reporting as a first-class feature.

Pricing is free for up to 20 invoices per month, and €7/month (or €60/year) beyond that. No accountant required.

The real thing I was solving for

When I look back at those midnight data-entry sessions, the problem wasn't that I lacked the right accounting software. The problem was that I was spending mental energy on infrastructure instead of on work.

Every hour I spent reconciling exports was an hour I wasn't designing, writing, building, or talking to customers. That's the actual cost of bad tooling for independent workers — not the software subscription, but the cognitive overhead.

Money Magician is my attempt to get that overhead as close to zero as possible. Not to make accounting faster, but to make it something you stop thinking about.

If that sounds like the tool you needed at midnight before an important meeting, give it a try.
